Tom O'Malley was a seasoned baseball veteran by the time he appeared on card number 152 of the 1987 ProCards set. He had been playing pro ball since 1979 and had first seen Major League action in 1982.
On December 3, 1986 the Rangers signed Tom as a free agent. He was primarily a third baseman. That ended up working against him as he was blocked by Steve Buechele. As a result O'Malley would split the 1987 season between Triple A and Arlington.
Tom would appear in 109 games for the Eighty-Niners in 1987. He would post a pretty decent .311 batting average and a .408 on base percentage in 431 at bats. His fielding percentage was .972.
Those numbers earned him some playing time in the Bigs but he didn't stick for Texas.
